EMPOWERING PEOPLE
Mthunzi responds holistically to the needs of children in difficult situations, assisting them to grow into responsible and reliable citizens.
The Mthunzi staff members are committed to:
Provide care and protection for vulnerable children.
Provide them with the means to develop all their potential, academically as well as human and spiritual network with other organizations, in Zambia as well as abroad, in order to provide better service to the children.
Two basic criteria are used to select children for residence at the Mthunzi Centre: their needs, and a willingness to live at the Centre. No child is in any way forced to stay at Mthunzi. Instead, the choice to take up residence at the Centre is freely made by the child and confirmed by the family.
While in residence, the children are cared for by a group of adults. They have regular meals as a family, get clothed, sent to school and receive medical attention when needed. They have time to play and visit their friends and schoolmates in the area, while counseling and remedial lessons are provided for those who need them.
Where possible, the children are encouraged and assisted to stay in touch with their relatives, in view of their reintegration into these families of origin.
Mthunzi is grounded in Christian spirituality and in the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church, and children are also supported in their spiritual growth, yet always leaving them free to practice the faith of their choice.
The basic principles of our education are freedom, responsibility and creativity. Children are accompanied in a growth process where they become independent, able to assume their duties and responsibilities and to express all their talents.
Sports (football, volleyball, acrobatics) and cultural activities (drama, traditional and modern music and dances) are incorporated into the daily lives of the resident children, which makes Mthunzi a place full of life and laughter.
Guests are welcome and children are encouraged to meet people from different cultures, languages and nations who come to visit us. Guests are welcome when children have free time and they are not busy with their studies. For guest coming from away there is separate accommodation a short walk away.
