ABOUT US
Mthunzi Centre started in the year 2000 and registered in Zambia as an NGO (ORS/102/35/2646), tpin: 1002333521.
Mthunzi Centre is home for about 40 vulnerable children and youths, most of them rescued from the streets of Lusaka, and situated in Tubalange area, Lusaka West, in a vast farm partly cultivated and partly still covered with indigenous trees, creating a serene family atmosphere.
In Mthunzi the children are given guidance from loving and professionally trained adults, and provided with meals, counseling, medical care while they attend the local government primary school, so that they are connected with the local children and youth, minimizing the institutional atmosphere
Those who have completed the primary cycle attend the nearby St. Columba’s Secondary School, a mixed secondary school, managed by the Teresian Sisters. The Mthunzi staff is composed of a team leader, a bursar, four social workers and two librarians. They to assist the children to rebuild positive relationships with their families of origin and have access to recreational, sports and cultural activities to develop their individual inclinations and talents.
The staff also supervises and supports the children who have been reintegrated and those who attend tertiary level education.
Since its inception Mthunzi Centre has journeyed with more than 350 youth helping them to grow as good independent citizen.
What is rather unique in Mthunzi is that actually most of the staff members are former street children who grew up at Mthunzi and, after having achieved the needed education and qualification, up to degree level. They therefore have a personal, inside understanding of the challenges in the life of the children under their care.
